"Green" Weddings at Woodend

Woodend is in the 2014 Issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings Magazine!

EcoBeautiful magazine 2014Your wedding is an opportunity to share your unique commitment to each other and to the environment. By designing your special event as an environmentally conscious couple, you can follow your hearts and inspire your guests while treading lightly on the earth.

We invite you to hold your green wedding at our nature sanctuary, Woodend in Chevy Chase, Maryland. By doing so, you directly support our environmental education programs and our conservation efforts on behalf of clean water, rural lands, and green neighborhoods. Also, the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Educators presented ANS with a certificate in May, 2007, signed by Governor Martin O'Malley in recognition of our maintenance of ANS's buildings, support for community learning about the environment, and support of area schools in achieving Green School status.

Woodend Sanctuary is a gorgeous, peaceful location, and is a featured destination of Exit the Highway.
— Together Green, August 8, 2012

Woodend is unique in that its wonderful grounds, spacious mansion house, and adjoining terrace allow couples to hold both their ceremony and reception at the same location. This reduces transportation considerably and the outdoor setting will infuse the whole event with a natural sensibility (and require less decorating, too!) Please consider these additional eco-minded measures taken at Woodend:

  • New efficient heating and cooling systems
  • Incandescent bulbs replaced with fluorescent where possible
  • Installation of lighting timer devices
  • Installation of efficient low-flow toilets and faucets
  • Environmentally sensitive cleaning supplies
  • All paper, bottles, cans, glass recycled
  • Removal of invasive plants, restoration of pond, self-mulching of lawn and new plantings are indigenous of the area
  • The Naturalist Quarterly is printed on 30% post-consumer waste paper

Besides the location of the ceremony and reception, there are many other choices and decisions to be made that can reflect your green values and express your commitment to the planet as well as each other. Here are some suggestions and helpful links.

Invitations ...
Set the green tone for your guests and consider sourcing 100% post-consumer waste, chlorine-free recycled paper for your invitations. Flower seeds can be imbedded in the paper so guests can plant them and enjoy the flowers that grow from them. And don't forget to pick up some extra green paper products for your guest book, place cards, and thank you notes.

Local Flowers ...

Fine Wines ...
More and more organic wines are available; check out options at Organic Wine Press.

Getting there ...
Use shuttles or buses from hotels to Woodend especially for your out-of-town guests. Encourage carpooling and make suggestions regarding hybrid car rentals and Eco-limos. Offsetting your guests' travel or asking them to do it as a wedding gift can be a significant green step.

Fleet Transportation, LLC, a local women-owned business, is the first Washington, DC ground transportation company to implement the Green Ride Global (GRG) Environmental Sustainability Program. The GRG Program is a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions measurement, reduction and reporting initiative specifically designed for leading companies in the global ground transportation industry.

Gifts and Favors ...
Consider green favors, such as organic honey wrapped in a poem or sentiment or homemade sachets filled with fragrant organic herbs. Small packets of organic tea tied together with satin ribbon make wonderful gifts as well.

Occasions Caterers has been recognized by the Green Restaurant Association as the nation's first off-premises catering company to achieve their distinguished environmental certification.

Other gifts for your attendants could be eco-friendly massage therapy, natural handmade jewelry, or fair trade coffee. Look in our Audubon Sanctuary Shop, located at the corner of the mansion nearest the parking lots, for more ideas!

Flower arrangements can be donated to rest homes or hospitals (Manor Care nursing home at the corner of Jones Mill Road and Jones Bridge Road appreciates wedding flowers from Woodend, and they can be left in the reception area.)

Where to Stay ...
When selecting a green place to stay, consider the Marriott. To learn about the Marriott's Green Conservation efforts and Green Hotel information, click here.

Into the Sunset ...
Start your journey together with an eco-friendly honeymoon. Consider taking an eco-tour or join one of ANS's many nature trips for a once-in-a-lifetime guided vacation.
